Wisdom for Gender

It seems like an obvious truth: God made us male and female. One human race, differentiated into two different, but complementary genders. It seems simple, and neat.

But in the hard realities of life in a broken world, it is anything but.

Increasingly so we are confronted by fluidity and intricacy within the cultural conception of gender. The somewhat recent “transformation” of athlete and reality star Bruce Jenner into Vanity Fair model Caitlyn Jenner brought the issue to the forefront of our collective mind. In reality, however, this is not just an issue in the hills of Hollywood but also in the suburbs of Australia.

Indeed, if we are to engage wisely and winsomely in this area we must go some way towards understanding phenomenons such as gender dysphoria, intersex, and transgenderism. To be sure, these phenomenons are undeniably complex and present us with a labyrinth of pastoral, theological, and ethical roads to explore. Complexity, however, does not excuse passivity. If we are to love God with all of our minds, then we are called to engage with all people and all manner of situations. This includes issue of gender.

However, due to the intricate matrix of psychological, biological, ethical, and theological questions this issues raises, it seems more appropriate to allow those who have done extensive research in this field to inform us. To that end, below you will initially find two links to articles written by Dan Patterson and Mark Yarhouse, followed by a number of additional articles from various theologians and pastors with wisdom for how to navigate this issue.

Dan Patterson is the co-ordinator of the website Embrace (www.embraceidentity.org), which is dedicated to providing “a Christian response to the many and varied issues regarding gender and sexuality.” Dan is currently completing a PhD in theological ethics, specifically in the field of theological anthropology in which he is focusing on the topic of gender.

Mark Yarhouse is the Rosemarie S. Hughes Endowed Chair and professor of psychology at Regent University, where he directs the Institute for the Study of Sexual Identity. He is the author ofUnderstanding Gender Dysphoria: Navigating Transgender Issues in a Changing Culture.

Let’s grow in wisdom together.

In grace,

Adam Schoenmaker
