Words of thought from our Church Team

These are a few of my favourite hymns…

Hi Church, I love music! I want to share with you some of my favourite hymns and worship songs. Did you see what I did with the title? I cheekily changed the lyrics of the well-known song ‘Favourite Things’ from the movie The Sound of Music. Music is powerful, it is beautiful, it is moving, it is a gift. Music has the ability to change moods, create atmospheres and most importantly worship God. When worshiping God, we not only bless Him we also strengthen our resolve in Him! Hymns (and Christian songs) help us to see who God is and what He has done for us. Further, they are a weapon or a tool in our process of becoming more like Jesus. About music, John Piper says “there are two weapons we have that we have to fight Satan with; the Word of God and song. I beseech you, give heed to the Word and sing with all your heart”.
I find it very difficult to pick just a few of my favourite songs. But I need to keep this blog to a page, so here are just three; 1]- I Will sing of My Redeemer, by Phillip P Bliss. It is over 100 years old and like many older hymns, I find the melody to be predictable and beautiful. The lyrics are timeless and so rich. 2] O the Mighty Hand, by CityAlight. This song was written in Australia, by a group of musicians in an Anglican church just 3 years ago. It is a fantastic song about how mighty, caring, loving, glorious and holy God is. 3] Victory by Hillsong College students. This is a favourite not just because the recording includes banjo (I think the sound of a banjo could even cheer up Eeyore). It is a favourite because I LOVE to sing of Christ’s resurrection. “Three days and the stone gave way, ain’t nothing but an empty grave. Gather all the sinners ‘round; tell them what great love we’ve found” Those lyrics give me goosebumps reading them, let alone singing them!
What song do you love to sing at church and in your own time? Friends, I encourage you to take hymns and worship songs seriously! Hear to what Martin Luther says about singing ‘Music is a fair and lovely gift of God which has often wakened and moved me to the joy of preaching… Music drives away the Devil and makes people happy… Next to theology I give to music the highest place and the greatest honor.’
…sing with all your heart!
